Porto Day 1
Madrid to Salamanca
We had an early departure to head to Porto with a stop in Salamanca for lunch. We travelled in a small bus and stopped at a very nice truck stop along the way. In Salamanca we explored the Plaza Mayor, the bell tower of the Catholic university, and the surrounding streets. For lunch, we tried the typical ham and cheese sandwiches.
Porto
After arriving in Porto, we had a quick break before an orientation walk with our guide. Porto is built on the side of a hill and getting around requires climbing many stairs and heading up and down very steep streets. We then had a great dinner at a small restaurant called The Wine Box. The walls of the restaurant were decorated using the side of wooden wine boxes. They offered a great variety of local wines and small menu of well made food. We enjoyed some local wine as recommended by our waiter. We tried croquettes, sausage puffs, and the ham tortilla. Matt tried an octopus dish prepared using a recipe specific to Porto. After dinner, we stopped by a small cocktail bar next to the hotel for an after dinner drink and ran into our guide.
