Lebanon Day 9
Baatara Gorge
We started the morning with an interesting drive up some very windy roads to Baatara gorge, a 837 ft sink hole that normally has a waterfall. We all took the cable car to the lip of the sink hole. After hiking around for a while Laurie and Matt decided to take the zip line back to the top while the rest of the group took the cable car back to the top.
Douma
After visiting the sink hole, stopped at a few interesting houses that have been turned into Air BNBs on our way to Douma, a small Lebanese village. Douma is know for making Turkish Delight. So, of course we had to stop into a cafe and try some of the local Turkish Delight and coffee.
Grilled Chicken Stop
It was time for a bite to eat so we stopped a road side restaurant well known for their grilled chicken. The restaurant is run by a small family, the mother and father cook and the son and daughter serve the customers. The locations was kind of in the middle of nowhere, but it is so popular that it requires reservations at night and in the weekends.
Dinner with Aunt Louly
We arrived into Beirut earlier than normal. David headed out to meet with some classmates while Laurie and Matt took it easy for a while. The night finished with dinner and drinks with David’s aunt, Louly. Louly’s husband ran the hotel and The Duke of Wellington pub. She told all kinds of stories about growing up in Egypt and how she dealt with the militias during the war.
