Off to Fes

Fes day 1

Travel to Fes

Another big day travel today. Almost as soon as we got on the bus one of our travel companions remembered it was Laurie’s birthday, so we sang Happy Birthday to her. There were probably 4 or 5 different versions of Happy Birthday songs that various people introduced us to after the standard version. We left Chefchaouen and traveled to visit the partly-excavated Berber-Roman city, Volubilis. The city remained standing until the 1755 Lisbon earthquake.

After we visiting the Roman ruins, we made a short trip for lunch. We stopped a women’s association in the region that helps women that did not go to school to gain skills. They served us a large number of small dishes to start, followed by tagine chicken with olives, and finally mint tea with coconut cookies. After lunch we had a quick Arabic lesson with our guide.

As we made our way into Fes, we saw the temps raise to 100° and it will likely be hotter later in the week.

Relaxing In Fes

We arrived in Fes in the early evening. After checking in, we dropped off some laundry with a local lady that washes, dries, and folds clothes, all charged by the kilo. We hiked and traveled a lot today, so a little rest was needed before dinner. Since we were a little tired, we grabbed dinner from a restaurant close to the hotel. We both had a great meal and the total for both of us was $15.50.
