Coyoacán & Main Square

CDMX Day 3

Coyoacán

We started the morning with another quick breakfast in the hotel. We decided to get an Uber and head to Coyoacán. Coyoacán is a neighborhood known for its cobblestone streets and colonial architecture. The Museo de Frida Kahlo is in this neighborhood as well as art galleries, and colorful artisan markets. While visiting the Frida Kahlo museum we witnessed a couple celebrating their 5th anniversary. While at the museum entrance the husband got down on his knee to renew their vows.

In the middle of Coyoacán is the Coyoacán Market. The market is spread over two building and sells just about anything you can think of. It is know for its produce, meats, and food stalls.

Visiting the main city square

From the Coyoacán area, we grabbed an Uber to visit the main city square and where much of the action of the city is happening. We visited the Gran Hotel, a luxury hotel with a stunning lobby and a Tiffany stained glass ceiling. We explored through out the downtown area, grabbed some lunch on the top floor of a building on the main square, and visited the Palacio de Bellas Artes (Fine Arts Palace) known for its Art Nouveau and Neoclassical exterior and the primarily Art Deco interior. The interior has amazing murals by González Camarena, Diego Rivera, and Siqueiros. One of the recommendations we were given was to visit the coffee shop at the top of the Sears department store across the street for great views of the Fine Arts Palace. The line for coffee was too long for us. So, we decided to enjoy the views of the building from plain ol’ Sears.

Joining our group and dinner

To wrap up the evening, we met up with the group we will be traveling with this week. Our group is small, only six of us plus our guide. After an orientation talk and a quick meet and greet, we headed as a group to dinner at a small taqueria.
