Lisbon Orientation

Lisbon Day 1

Porto to Lisbon

We headed out of Porto this morning to make our way to Lisbon. We took the train, but first we needed to carry our luggage up to the train station. Upon arrival in Lisbon, we did a quick orientation walk and took a funicular up one of the more steep streets.

Food Tour

We broke away from the orientation walk a little early to join a Lisbon food tour.

  • Our first stop was Ginjinha Popular, where we tried the bifanas (pork steak sandwich) and also the chouriço and a half cow, half goat cheese.
  • Along the way, we stopped at a small ginjinha (sour cherry liqueur) shop.
  • We then went to Cantinho do Aziz where we had samosas in an interesting part of the city inhabited by a large elderly population. We also saw an interesting art project where a photographer has photographed all of the older inhabitants and then has “printed” those photos on the walls of the neighborhood.
  • Afterwards we went to Tasquinha Canto do Fado. Here we tried the veggies, roast potatoes, octopus salad and, as a main dish, Bacalhau à Brás (potato and cod salad). We also tried homemade ginjinha for dessert.
  • The last stop was Pastelaria de Santo António where we had pastel de nata for dessert.

Portugal VS Georgia

After the food tour, we joined the rest of our group to watch the Portugal vs Georgia game at a local food market. Portugal lost 2-0. To finish out the night, we stopped a roof top bar to enjoy the night sights.
