Luchadores of Mexico City

Mexico City Center City Redux

Center City Tour

Today was the first full day with the tour group. Since we were such a small group, Nathan, our tour guide, said he would take us to the center of the city and give a quick tour. This was the same place we visited yesterday. He showed us some of the ruins discovered in the 1960’s, took us into the cathedral on the square, pointed out important areas and buildings, and brought us to a museum dedicated to a Diego Rivera mural.

Lunch & Photographic Museum

After our tour we broke out on our own to do whatever we wanted. We stopped for lunch in a nice restaurant. Laurie enjoyed steak tacos, while Matt tried the maguey worm tacos with guacamole. The maguey worm is the same worm found in some bottles of tequila. They were slightly crunchy and had a nutty flavor.

After lunch with visited the Museum of Photographic Archives. They had a variety of nice exhibits over three floors. Our plan was to grab an Uber back to the hotel, but the downtown was super busy and packed with people and cars. We tried to walk a bit to get away from most of the congestion. After a few attempts of multiple drivers cancelling the ride or it taking 15-20 for a driver to show up, we decide to make the 2.5 mile walk back to the hotel. That walk did allow us to walk through Chinatown along the way.

Dinner & Lucha Libre

After chilling in the hotel room for a while, we headed out to grab a few tacos at the same place we ate the night before. After dinner it was time for the main event, Lucha Libre. The Lucha Libre matches were held in a dedicated arena that holds 22,000 people. The crowd was very into each match and as the matches went on, the crowd got more excited. You can certainly see that the WWE wrestling we have in the US came from Lucha Libre wrestling.
