Miyajima Island
Our only planned event today was a visit to Miyajima island. We took two train rides and then a ferry to arrive on the island. Miyajima is famous for the UNESCO World Heritage site Itsukushima Shrine and its "floating" torii gate. The shrine and its 55-foot-tall, vibrant vermilion torii gate appear to float at high tide and are accessible by foot at low tide. The shrine was first built in the 6th century and expanded in 1168. The island is also known for its wild deer population that roams the streets, particularly around the shrine area. We were warned to be careful around the deer, since they are known for eating paper and particularly like passports and Japan Rail passes. We took a cable car to the top of Mt. Misen, the highest point of the island for panoramic views of the surrounding area. After taking in the views, we explored the small town and enjoyed a nice lunch.

Udon Dinner
Once back at the hotel we met up with our travel group for a quick drink and then headed out to a local udon shop for dinner. As has become the norm, we stopped for ice cream at the Lawson next to the hotel.
